Cog lives in your own hosted Minecraft world. Say what you want in chat and they go and do it: follow you down the mine, build the castle you described, guard the base, write a game for the four of you. Your friends join with the game they already own, and nobody installs anything.

What you say, and what happens
<you> Come with me, we're going mining.
On foot, over the hills and round the water, at your pace. In survival Cog digs a real staircase down, lights it as they go, and comes back up with the iron in their hands and a count you can check against the chest.
<you> Build us a treehouse village in that oak.
Cog designs the place rather than importing a schematic, builds it in the world you are standing in while you watch, then measures what went up: the doors open, the route can be walked, the roof is a roof.
<you> Stay here and watch the base.
Anything hostile that walks into the ring you left them in gets dealt with. They break off before they die in your doorway, and you are told what turned up while you were away.
<you> Make up a game for the four of us.
New rules, a scoreboard and an arena arrive in the running world. Nobody gets kicked or installs anything, and the game is playable a few seconds after you asked.
Companion mods and this
If you want a voice that comments on your game, a companion mod does that well and some are free. If you want a second player in the world who does the work with you, that is what Cubelings is for. The comparison page goes through the options.
What it needs from you
You need your own copy of Minecraft: Java Edition on a computer, or, in beta, Minecraft Bedrock on an iPhone, iPad, Android device or Windows PC. Consoles cannot join yet. There is no mod and no API key: Cog runs on the server, so a friend on a school laptop joins the same way you do. Java players pick the world’s version in Minecraft Launcher once, and the joining guide shows every step.

Questions
No. Cubelings is a hosted Minecraft world with the AI companion already in it. There is nothing to install and no API key to paste in. You join the world from the normal game and start talking to Cog in the chat.
Phones, tablets and Windows, yes, in beta: Bedrock players on iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows join the same world as Java players, and Cog answers them too. Xbox, PlayStation and Switch cannot add a server address, so they cannot join yet.
New accounts get a 14-day trial without a card. Paid plans start at US$14 a month (plus GST in Australia). The trial player list fits you and up to four friends; friends do not need a Cubelings subscription.
Not in this beta. The companion is Cog, with Cog’s look and manner; naming, skins and personality settings are on the list of things the beta does not do yet.
Yes. In survival nothing appears from nowhere: Cog walks there, digs it, smelts it and crafts it, in that order, and can die trying. In creative they build whatever you describe on the spot.
The world is private, whitelist-only and on no public server list. Cog refuses the things you would expect them to refuse, and they can undo their recorded creative-mode builds. The safety page has the full list.
